The only way out.. The only way out..

Rated 1.5 / 5 stars October 24, 2007

Meh.

I'd have given it a couple points higher if it weren't for the stupid little "easter egg". That's just annoying. And I know you said you recorded the sound like that on purpose, but it doesn't sound creepy or weird, just like you were holding the mike too close. You should add those effects digitally if you want to make it sound creepy.

TheFunk responds:

Okay. And The easter egg was a joke, it was a shit pop up i wanted people to laugh at, but i guess... it scared u? O_o

Misunderstanding i assume.

Awesome music video!

This is an awesome video. Everything is extremely stylistic and well done, and it is very fitting of the song. Every corner is packed with little details that could easily escape notice, which is probably why you have to click on those little things for the secret clip, so viewers will pay attention to detail. Speaking of which, the icon hunt adds a fun bit of interactivity, and the secret clip is definitely worth finding. My only complaint is that it's a little tough to find them all, especially considering that everyone should try to see the secret clip. Particularly tough is the cow, since you have to search below the time bar thing.
For those still searching, the cow is at 2:13 to 2:14. The others can be found: Between 0:55 and 1:00, Between 1:10 and 1:15, Between 1:22 and 1:27, Between 1:30 and 1:33, Between 2:00 and 2:05, Between 3:08 and 3:15, and Between 3:48 and 3:51. (I hope that isn't giving away too much)

Super Mario bros Z ep 3 Super Mario bros Z ep 3

Rated 4.5 / 5 stars July 10, 2006

Another excellent piece of work!

You are an awesome flash animator, man. The fight scene was AMAZING, these are good effects, the humor is spot-on, the music is appropriate and you seem to have an interesting plot brewing. Love the DBZ references.
A couple of minor niticks, though, to make the great even greater. It was kind of out of the blue for yoshi to bust out super-fighting and put up that much of a fight, as well as take that much of a beating and survive, much less keep fighting (and if he can tuck into a nigh-invincible eggshell, why didn't he do that while he was falling off of the cliff?)
The button to advance dialouge should remain in the same place instead of moving around the box with the text, so you can skip through dialouge more easily if you've already seen it, as well as just being more convenient. The movie could use buttons to pause and go to the main menu. In the credits, it might be nice if you listed where each piece of music was used in your movie. Oh, and speaking of music, might I recommend you take a look at music from the Legend of Dragoon for ps1? You can find it at vgmusic, you might find it appropriate. Or maybe not, whatever.
I hope this helps, and please continue to gift us unworthy ones with your wonderful work!

AVGM AVGM

Not worth it

Don't play this; it's basically one big F you from the creator to anyone who bothers to sit through it. He's lying about the innovation award (there's no such award, and AVGM wasn't even entered into the 2010 IGF awards) and I'm pretty sure there aren't really multiple endings either but like hell am I going through that again (which, FYI, takes just over 10,000 clicks) just to be sure. The ending is just a single screen saying you're an idiot for clicking for so long. Though if you're curious definitely use an auto-clicker, because I'm pretty sure he's lying about auto-clicker detection too.
The "secret title" is Abusive Video Game Manipulation, and that's what this is intended as; the author wrote a blog post at http://edmundmcmillen.blogspot.com/20 09/02/avgm-retrospective.html explaining the game. In my opinion it's too cruel a joke, as well as being unfair to directly lie in the game description; I just clicked in the background while I was watching a movie, but I still feel cheated.

Mardek Rpg: Chapter 1 Mardek Rpg: Chapter 1

Rated 4.5 / 5 stars June 10, 2007

A solid RPG and a good start to a series.

Others have said most of the specifics already, so I'll just make a few comments. First of all, what is the last entry for artifacts in the encyclopedia? I though I was pretty thorough in finding everything in the game, but that one spot was the only thing that remained blank at the end. Did I miss something, or was there no way to fill that in in this chapter?

As for the dragon, I didn't fight the harder version so I can't really say whether those complaining were justified, but I can imagine it being so. You mentioned strategy in your responses to some of the reviews, but if there's only one strategy that works you can't really blame those who didn't stumble upon it (I poisoned him towards the beginning and then just kept fighting). Showing his HP count could also have made things less confusing, there wasn't really any reason to hide it since the other bosses show their HP, this wasn't really a big or mysterious battle or anything, and you could track his general status by his bar anyway. I think a lot of the trouble with the intro sequence is that by thrusting people, in effect, into the middle of the adventure, you presented them with a wealth of options and choices they weren't prepared to deal with. Which attacks work best? Which attack command should I use? What's the timing on these responses? And the large dice numbers made it difficult to estimate the average results for attacks and abilities. The reason most RPGs start you out weak is so you have few options in the beginning. You adjust to the system one step at a time as you gain new options: Your first alternative equipment, your first magic spell, your first learnable ability, etc.
There's really nothing wrong with showing just what the system will build up to before you begin this process, as you did with the intro sequence. However, if you do so, it really should be basically a cakewalk so that the player can succeed even if he cannot make the optimal choices. Nerfing the dragon's difficulty really only improved the game's quality in that sense; there's a reason the into is easy in most RPGs, because dying before you have a chance to get into things isn't any fun.
...Sorry if I've wandered a bit, my mind tends to do that. I hope I got across what I was trying to say regardless.

As for the rest of the game, I too experienced the glitch were the sidequest only takes one lead pipe to get the reward if you're keeping them in multiple inventory slots. The reward seems a little weak for the work you have to do; the character I equipped it to didn't even end up getting hit with any sleep attacks. I'd probably have it give +1 to defense along with it's sleep resistance or something (maybe drop the sleep resistance to 50% if you think that'd be too powerful otherwise).

Another thing, you seem awfully harsh to your audience in your responses as I look over the earlier reviews. Any submission is going to have to deal with idiots, but blatently insulting them is only stooping to their level, and many of them didn't even seem to be that bad. It's possible you were being more sarcastic then cruel or something, but it doesn't seem that way when your comments are put into flat typeface. Calling your players idiots does nothing to increase your public standing, you know? Take Maelstormm as an example (author of megaman next and megaman X next games). He has a lot of idiots to deal with who were wrongfully insulting his games, but he laughed it off and so elevated himself above them. He even has a section on his website about his dealings with these people.

Anyway, my constructive criticism done I'll close by saying that this was overall a good game and I look forward to playing the sequels.

Pseudolonewolf responds:

The intro, where you're incredibly powerful and the normal Monsters can barely scratch you, was meant to give players a feel for most of the aspects of the game without any risk of dying because of their mistakes or anything... The couple of areas before The Dragon were supposed to give people a chance to experiment with their techniques and reactions, but I suppose I messed all that up when I made The Dragon hard... I mean, initially it was a LOT easier, but then I made it harder because I thought people would complain about how easy it was! Oh, what a fool I was!
Anyway, the weakened dragon has 4000 HP, not "????" HP, so you've most likely only fought the strong one. Newgrounds still hasn't updated the file with the weakened version... Bah.

In the battle with the PoshGoblin, sleep attacks can potentially be really annoying, hence the Cog Necklace; it's just luck if you don't get hit by any...

Did I actually call anyone "idiots" directly? o_O
I know I said things like "lazy" and "inept", but I was sort of trying to avoid blatant name-calling...
It really is rather frustrating though to spend so long on a game that most people quit before getting to the main part of it because they're too lazy or unskilled to get anywhere! And then they say the *game's* flawed, because, of course, that's always the case; they themselves are perfect.
Though... I suppose I SHOULD stop insulting them (EVEN THOUGH THEY INSULT ME WITH THEIR STUPIDITY!1!1).

But, uh... yes. Thanks for writing so much! o_O

Good boss music.

An interesting boss theme with a psychological edge. I kind of pictured it in a battle against a sephiroth-type enemy, is that what you had in mind? The only problem is that it kind of seems to stall without going anywhere. That's not necessarily bad since most boss music should loop I guess, but it still feels like it might be able to use some kind of climax.

Well, I'm inspired!

This is some awesome inspirational music, all right. Maybe a bit exaggerated at times, but good if for some reason you want to further encourage an egomaniac. I only have a couple of questions:

1) Where did you include this song in Mortal Kombat Kamidogu 8? Is it some easter egg I missed, and if so where can I find it?

2) Was this written with anyone in particular in mind?
